This process makes each slate tile nearly (if it is calibrated) an identical thickness – usually within 1/16″ or so. With most stone tiles this is not really a designation you need to look for – unless it is slate. Most all other natural stone tiles (granite, marble, etc.) are cut to an identical thickness.
Slate tiles. Slate tiles are finegrained metamorphic stones formed from clay, sedimentary rock shale, and sometimes quartz. This stone can be very thin and therefore break / flake more easily than other stones. Slate is usually black, grey, or green and can be found with reflective colours of silver or copper and ranges of red tones throughout.
We can distinguish between two types of slate roof tiles: natural slates and artificial slates. They are available in a square or rectangular shape and their corners can either be straight or round. Ceramic Tile. Ceramic tiles are made from clay and fired at high temperatures until they solidify. Because they're stain and waterresistant, ceramic tiles are ideal for indoor use in practically any location (on or above grade). When properly cared for, they can last a lifetime with minimal care.
· Both slate and porcelainceramic tile are very durable and dense, so you should choose on what you like based on appearance. There is a difference between porcelainceramic tile and regular ceramic tile, with the porcelain being stronger, denser and having very low moisture absorption.
Slate rock splits easily into strong, thin sheets and has many diverse uses. Slabs of slate, when sawn to specified dimensions, produce regular blocks that make durable roof tiles, floor tiles, flagstones and structural building components. Slate also contributes widely to preserving human knowledge of the past.
For this reason, Italian slate was seen to be the superior choice for many years. The mineral makup of the slate found in this area provided the best conditions for optimum play. The biggest difference between Italian slate and Brazilian slate is that Italian slate is much softer so it can't be used outdoors.
Like ceramic, porcelain tile is nearly impossible to stain, scratch resistant and easy to maintain. Install it anywhere you like. Saltillo Tile. Like slate, many people love the unique look and vibrant yelloworange colors of Saltillo tile, but when compared with other options, Saltillo has some drawbacks.
